I am just wondering wich model of Soundtrack Topaz is the best one.Project 8 MXD RX8 Etc Is there a difference between the Topaz 24-8-2 (Non-project 8 ) and the Project 8 Thanks.
I know there were earlier versions that have more pastel colored knobs and the newer ones are regular blues, reds, and grays. The later is what I have and it says Topaz in big red letters and then Project 8 next to that. My console is a 2482 I would guess the MXD and RX8 are not Topaz console but other Soundtracs models, but what do I know. Never seen those. Oh and Ive heard people refer to the earlier color scheme as the Miami Vice Topaz. From my understanding, they are the same except the newer ones have a beefier internal power components. This feels a little weird, but i agree with trodden again, i do that alot it seems. I have a Project 8 32x8x2 and couldnt be happier. I think the Topaz that is the Best is the one you can find thats in your budget. And if anybody finds a 32 channel meter bridge for one of these guys let me know As far as parts, the Topaz is based on a pretty standard op amp system and the pots are pretty readily available on Digi-Key or Mouser so i wouldnt worry too much about parts. Soundtracs Topaz 14 4 Professional So IfId prefer one with a meter bridge wich is practicle and makes you think youre a professional So if anybody got one for sale and is ready to ship it here in Canada, let me know. One more question: would you recommend the Miami Vice over the Project 8 or Vice (hehe. It seems like the Project 8, other than having better knobs, has more meter bridges, am I right But like a lot of things, sometimes the original version is better than the newer. Is it the case here, I mean, soundwise Thanks folks Guillaume. Theres a shitload so its hard to justify the cost of replacing them all. I had to replace the power supply (or something) inside of the board and it was actually really easy to open. Opened it up, pulled it out, and while i had the guts available, did the 4 mods. Amazingly, i only had one left over screw that didnt seem to fit anywhere. I mean according to Tim Jones form studio systems in UK, only the pots have been changed. Here is his reply to my e-mail asking him what were the differences between the Miami Vice and the Project 8 version: There wernt any tech changes, exactly the same manual: the PROJECT is more popular just because of the colour scheme, and the knobs are more beefier better feel, Im sure the psu is the same, they put LM388 regulators in stead of the LM317 but that was only on the 32 version anyway yes they do overheat because IF they are set on a table theres no vent under the internal psu. I guess its all down to price,, try it out yourself, dont believe all the rumour that spreads around the internet, Main thing is DONT get a trashed one,,, they are NOT service friendly if you need to go digging around on the PCBs, better to wait for a good condition one, then get the psu checked, maybe put new bridges in if they look a bit roasted and tighten up the regulators:, keep her chocked up or on stand and youll get years of fun out it Interesting isnt it. Ive never had any issues with the PS but it does get hot in that area. I keep it cool in the studio always and hardly use phantom on the board and if I do its a max of 3 channels.
